چکیده

In recent years strategic management scholars have expressed enormous interest in the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm. Despite its appeal as a conceptual framework, the RBV has often been criticized for lack of an empirical base. Few researchers have been able to develop measures of resources and capabilities, identify their importance in a specific industry context, and link firms’ resource positions to dimensions of performance. In this paper we attempt such an investigation of Japanese and U.S. automobile companies from the 1960s through 1997. Our findings show long-lived differences in efficiency among the auto producers, which arguably are equivalent to sustained competitive advantage. Our methodology draws upon work by Battese and Coelli (1995) on the estimation of stochastic frontier production function (SFPF) models, which provide a framework for identifying the sources of inter-firm differences in efficiency. We demonstrate the potential of SFPF models for adding empirical content to the RBV.

Assessing the Resource Base of Japanese and U.S. Auto Producers: A Stochastic Frontier Production Function Approach

The “resource-based view of the firm” has become an important conceptual framework in strategic management but has been widely criticized for lack of an empirical base. To address this deficit, we utilize a new method for identifying inter-firm differences in efficiency within the context of stochastic frontier production functions. Using data on Japanese and U.S. automobile manufacturers, we d...

Assessing the Resource Base of US and Japanese Auto Producers: A Stochastic Frontier Production Function Approach

The “resource-based view of the firm” has become an important conceptual framework in strategic management but has been widely criticized for lack of an empirical base. Comparative productivity of Japanese and U.S. steel producers, 1958±1993

Using historical, ®rm-level data, this study compares the productivity of Japanese and U.S. integrated steel producers. In recent decades Japanese producers have demonstrated higher labor productivity than their U.S. counterparts, due largely to higher investment. Calculations of multifactor productivity suggest that the American ®rms, nevertheless, maintain a small advantage in overall ef®cien...

Effect of different levels of dietary vitamin E on reproductive and productive performances in Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E on reproductive and productive parameters in Japanese quails. A total number of 240 female and 80 male Japanese quail were divided into five treatments with four replications in a completely randomized design. Experimental diets were zero control, 30, 60, 120 and 240 mg kg-1 of vitamin E. Fertility and total hatch...
